The Lagos State along with Osun, Oyo and Ogun states has declared Monday June 12 public holiday in memory of June 12 anniversary in the state.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos issued the statement through the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, asserting that the state is committed to commemorating the annulled 1993 Presidential election, which was adjudged most free and fair election in Nigeria so far in history.
Describing June 12 as one of the most defining moment in Nigeria’s political record, shaping her democracy, Mr Ambode said after 24 years the idea of celebrating it worths it.
The governor further urged Nigerians to see beyond June 12 commemoration but make all effort to entrench a workable democracy, saying this is the way to immortalise the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, late Chief M.K.O Abiola.
Ambode said Nigerians should remember late Abiola by conducting credible and fair election and by practising true federalism.
“Though our democracy is far from an ideal, but we are all bound to make joint efforts to build fiscal federalism by which we can fulfil true nationhood”.
Mr Ambode, further noted that June 12 is not a day that must be forgotten in the annals of Nigeria democratic history.
“It is our duty to truly immortalise the fallen heroes of the June 12. Those who struggle for national freedom and those who sacrifice to deepen our democratic values.
“Though military junta cancelled the election result and peoples’ hope were dashed, we still have a big lesson to learn.
He described June 12 as the real Democracy Day in Nigeria.
“To celebrate June 12, the state government has perfected arrangement with annual public symposium which would be held Monday”, Mr Ambode noted.
