The White House has warned that the United States could strike Iran’s main oil export hub, Kharg Island, as tensions rise over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials said the US military is ready to act if ordered by President Donald Trump, following reports that Washington is weighing options to pressure Tehran into reopening the vital shipping route.

Kharg Island handles most of Iran’s crude exports and is central to its energy sector. The warning came after Axios reported that US officials were considering plans to occupy or blockade the island.

White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said the military had the capability to “take out” the island at any time. She added that the administration had prepared for possible action against what she described as threats from Iran.

The latest remarks come as the US increases its military presence in the Middle East. Reports indicate additional Marines are being deployed, raising concerns about a potential ground operation amid the ongoing US-Israeli campaign.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes, has been largely blocked by Iran in recent weeks. The disruption has slowed commercial shipping and pushed global oil prices higher.

President Trump said US forces had already struck targets on Kharg Island, claiming military sites were “totally obliterated”. He warned that further action could target critical infrastructure if Iran continues to restrict maritime traffic.

Earlier, the US leader described Kharg as a lightly defended facility and signalled readiness for further strikes.

The situation marks a sharp escalation in the conflict, which began on February 28. With energy supplies under pressure and military activity increasing, fears are growing over wider regional instability.
