Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence after a car crash in Florida, police have said.

The 15-time major winner was arrested on Friday after his vehicle overturned while attempting to overtake a trailer. Officers said the car tipped onto its side and slid before coming to a stop.

Woods was not injured in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

According to authorities, the golfer showed signs of impairment at the scene. A breathalyser test returned a negative result, but police said he refused to provide a urine sample.

Sheriff John Budensiek said officers observed “signs of impairment” and carried out roadside tests before placing Woods under arrest.

He was also charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. The offences are not classified as felonies.

Woods was held for about eight hours at the Martin County jail before being released on bail in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said alcohol was not suspected in the incident, adding that the golfer had explained his past injuries and surgeries during questioning.

The crash happened shortly after 2pm local time in the town where Woods lives. Authorities said the vehicle was travelling at high speed in a 30mph zone when it lost control.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was not injured.

The incident comes five years after Woods survived a serious crash that left him with major leg injuries.
