Former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a fresh shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
The ex-governor of Kano State registered with the party on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano, where he also received his membership card. The event drew several high-profile political figures, including ADC National Chairman David Mark, former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
Others present were Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.
Kwankwaso’s move comes a day after he announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing the need for political realignment.
In a statement released on Sunday, the former Defence Minister said his decision followed a careful review of the country’s political direction.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” he said.
He described the exit as difficult, noting his long-standing ties with the party. However, he stressed that current national realities require a new political platform with stronger prospects for change.
“As a committed member of the party, this was not an easy decision. But given the present political trajectory, I believe it is necessary to align with a platform that offers a better chance to move the country forward,” he added.
Kwankwaso thanked NNPP leaders, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, for their support during his time in the party. He also praised members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty.
He said collaboration with his supporters would continue as efforts intensify towards shaping Nigeria’s future.
