- Union Backs Disciplinary Action, Calls for Respect in Academia
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch, has commended Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, for his restraint and professionalism after being physically assaulted by a student.
The incident occurred when Dr. Okoye attempted to pass through a hallway where a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious, from the Department of History and International Studies, was filming a TikTok video. Angered by the interruption, she allegedly attacked him, biting and physically assaulting him.
In a letter signed by ASUU-UNIZIK Chairman Kingsley Ubaoji and Secretary Joseph Onyejiaka, the union praised Dr. Okoye’s maturity in handling the situation.
“ASUU commends Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye for his exemplary display of restraint and civility in the face of this unfortunate incident. His composed response has not only upheld his dignity but also brought honour to the union and the university community,” the statement read.
The union also lauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor for his prompt and decisive action, which included immediate disciplinary measures against the student.
ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of lecturers while emphasizing the need for a safe and respectful academic environment.
The union called for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure that university campuses remain places of learning and mutual respect.
