Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress, the coalition-backed party he is expected to use as his political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku confirmed the move in a post on his X handle on Monday, sharing a photo of himself holding an ADC membership card with the caption, “It’s official.” His decision comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party in July following prolonged internal disputes.
Monday’s announcement marks his full alignment with the opposition coalition that adopted the ADC in July as a common platform for major opposition figures. Atiku had earlier endorsed the party alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal.
Before now, Atiku and other coalition leaders had delayed formal registration with the ADC while consultations continued. Their move is expected to shape the emerging opposition front aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
The coalition had unveiled the ADC leadership structure with former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary.
