Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of eroding democratic institutions and steering Nigeria towards authoritarian rule.

In a statement issued on Monday, Atiku criticised the actions of the Department of State Services (DSS), following reports that operatives sealed properties linked to former Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

He described the move as unlawful and politically driven, noting that the matter was already before the courts. According to Atiku, the action reflects a broader pattern of intimidation by state institutions.

“This is not governance. This is intimidation,” he said, warning that security agencies are being used to suppress dissent rather than protect national security.

Atiku argued that recent developments point to a decline in democratic norms, with opposition figures facing increasing pressure. He alleged that the government is using state power to weaken political rivals ahead of future elections.

He also linked the situation to what he called a wider strategy to consolidate control, claiming that prominent figures are being targeted to force political alignment with the ruling party.

The former vice president warned that such actions could limit political competition and weaken electoral credibility if left unchecked.

Drawing a historical comparison, Atiku said Nigeria must avoid repeating past political crises, urging citizens to remain vigilant in defending democratic principles.

He further raised concerns about the use of anti-corruption agencies, alleging they are being deployed in ways that could influence political loyalty.

The presidency has not responded publicly to the claims.

Atiku said strong leadership should allow open political competition, adding that democracy depends on the protection of choice and dissent.
