Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar has urged voters in Abuja to back candidates of the African Democratic Congress in Saturday’s area council elections, calling the poll a test of Nigeria’s electoral credibility.
Atiku spoke on Wednesday after meeting residents in Gwarinpa alongside party leaders, including Peter Obi. He said the vote would show whether election authorities can deliver free and fair polls and whether citizens are ready for political change.
He encouraged residents across the Federal Capital Territory to turn out in large numbers and choose ADC candidates, whom he described as capable of providing effective leadership at the local level. He also urged voters to resist intimidation and participate peacefully.
Atiku criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing it of failing to improve the economy, education and security. He said Nigerians had been pushed deeper into hardship despite the country’s resources and argued that voters should begin removing the party from power starting with local elections.
He also criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu, claiming it had not addressed key national challenges and had allowed insecurity to persist. The government has repeatedly defended its policies, saying reforms take time to deliver results.
The FCT council elections will fill local government positions across Abuja’s six area councils. Political observers say the outcome could serve as an early indicator of voter mood ahead of future national contests.
Atiku said the election offers residents a chance to shape grassroots leadership and send a message about the direction they want the country to take.
