Atiku Slams APC Over “Hostile Rhetoric,” Calls for Democratic Accountability

Date:

  • Condemns APC’s Remarks on Peter Obi as Threat to Free Speech
  • Warns Against Rising Authoritarianism Under Tinubu Administration

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, over what he termed inflammatory comments targeting Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

Atiku, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the same election, described Morka’s remarks as emblematic of the administration’s broader strategy to suppress dissent and stifle opposition.

“Crossed the Line” Comments

Reacting to Morka’s statement that Obi had “crossed the line” and should “be ready for whatever comes his way,” Atiku expressed concern over the dangerous undertones of such rhetoric.

“The language used by the APC spokesperson reflects an alarming disdain for democratic norms. It undermines civil discourse and signals a troubling shift toward authoritarian governance,” Atiku stated.

He called on the APC to clarify the “chilling threat” and issue a public apology to Obi and Nigerians, noting that a functioning democracy thrives on healthy debates and the free exchange of ideas.

Condemnation of Detentions

Atiku also criticized the prolonged detention of Mahdi Shehu, a prominent government critic, as well as other opposition voices, arguing that these actions reflect a worrying erosion of fundamental freedoms under President Tinubu’s administration.

“If anyone has truly ‘crossed the line,’ it is the Tinubu administration, whose vilification of opposition figures sets a dangerous precedent,” Atiku said.

Warning Against Authoritarianism

The former Vice President expressed alarm at what he termed the administration’s increasingly hostile stance toward dissent, urging Nigerians and the international community to hold the government accountable.

He argued that the APC’s rhetoric and actions are stifling free speech and undermining Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

“The survival of our democracy hinges on the protection of free speech and the recognition of opposition voices as essential to accountability and good governance,” Atiku emphasized.

Call for Dialogue

Atiku concluded by urging the Tinubu administration to adopt a more inclusive and respectful approach to governance, emphasizing the need for dialogue, constructive engagement, and adherence to democratic principles.

He reiterated his commitment to defending Nigeria’s democratic values, calling on all citizens to resist any attempts to silence opposition voices.
