National Grid: TCN Begins Recovery Efforts and Upgrades to Prevent Future Outages

Date:

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has initiated recovery efforts to stabilize the national grid following a disruption on Thursday at 11:29 a.m. According to TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the disturbance was triggered by a sudden rise in grid frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, leading to an automatic shutdown of a substation to prevent further complications. The Abuja area was reconnected within 28 minutes as part of these swift recovery actions.

Mbah explained that the frequency surge stemmed from issues at a TCN substation. In response, TCN has launched major repairs and upgrades across several critical transmission lines and substations, including work on the Shiroro–Mando 330kV line, the Jebba Transmission substation, and the Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV line.

Following a recent investigative report on past grid collapses, TCN has started addressing identified vulnerabilities to strengthen the grid’s stability and resilience. These ongoing efforts involve technical upgrades and strategic interventions to prevent future disruptions. Mbah acknowledged that some instability might continue until all major improvements are finalized and asked for public understanding as TCN works through this transition.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to a stable power supply, recognizing its importance for Nigeria’s socio-economic growth. Mbah assured the public that all necessary measures, including addressing vandalism on transmission infrastructure, are being implemented to ensure long-term grid stability.
