Resignations have started within Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council as a deadline for political appointees seeking elective office takes effect.

The directive, issued under the Electoral Act 2026, requires all appointees to step down before taking part in party primaries for the 2027 general elections.

So far, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, have resigned.

Tuggar confirmed his exit on Monday and is set to contest the Bauchi State governorship. In his resignation letter, he thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, highlighting achievements in foreign policy and diaspora engagement.

Sununu also stepped down to pursue a senatorial seat in Kebbi State. He previously served in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the healthcare services committee.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, signed the circular enforcing the deadline. It covers ministers, advisers, and heads of government agencies.

The rule aims to stop appointees from using public office to gain an advantage in elections.

More resignations are expected before the deadline, as interest in key state and national positions grows.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
