The Delta State Police Command has issued a warning that residents found guilty of indecent dressing will face penalties under the state’s Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.
The warning was shared in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Department on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
According to the statement, offenders risk paying a fine of up to ₦50,000 or being sentenced to court-ordered community service.
The VAPP law, originally signed at the federal level in 2015 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, was adopted by the Delta State House of Assembly in July 2020. The law prohibits various forms of violence, abuse, and harmful practices, providing legal protection for victims in both public and private life.
Section 29 of the Delta State VAPP Law specifically addresses indecent exposure. It states that any person who “intentionally exposes any of his or her private parts wholly or partly in public” commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding ₦50,000, community service, or both.
The police command emphasized that the law would be enforced to curb inappropriate public behavior, stating in Pidgin: “Delta state government nor dey smile for that kain dressing.”
Authorities urged residents to comply with the law and dress appropriately, particularly in public spaces such as schools and workplaces.
