Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress, marking a major political shift in the state.
Yusuf defected to the ruling party on Monday at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, where senior APC figures formally received him. Those present included former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Yusuf Ata, and other party leaders.
Speaking at the event, Yusuf said his return to the APC was driven by the need to work more closely with the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu. He said closer cooperation would help accelerate development projects and improve governance outcomes for Kano residents.
“I am returning to a platform I know, with structures that allow effective collaboration with the centre for the benefit of our people,” the governor said.
Yusuf was elected governor in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, ending the APC’s grip on the state at the time. His decision to leave the NNPP comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Several members of the Kano State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives are also understood to have defected alongside the governor, further strengthening the APC’s position in the state.
Welcoming Yusuf back to the party, APC leaders described the defection as a boost for the ruling party and said it reflected growing confidence in its leadership at both state and federal levels.
