Several states are racing to implement flood mitigation strategies following NiMet’s warning of imminent heavy rainfall.

In Ondo State, recent flooding in Owo, Okitipupa, and Ilaje has left residents anxious. Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami said the government had launched sensitisation drives and partnered with federal agencies to clear waterways.

“We’ve warned people against dumping refuse in drains and are working with NEMA to decongest water channels,” said his spokesperson, JohnPaul Akinduro.

In Benue, residents in lowland areas such as New Garage and Rice Mill have started relocating children and valuables. However, many complain of limited government support and lack of relocation centres.

Yobe State’s capital, Damaturu, saw flooding on Monday. Retired police officer Mohammed Suleiman blamed poor drainage. “The state builds flyovers while gutters are left clogged,” he said.

The government has now begun clearing blocked drains across the capital, even as the flood preparedness efforts now included community awareness, clearing waterways, and setting up response teams. Still, many residents argue that real change requires more infrastructure and less talk.
