A proposal presented to Senator Ali Modu Sherrif, the National Chairmar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, not to contest for the 2019 presidential ticket in 2018 brought the party’s meeting to an uproar yesterday at the National Assembly.
The lawmakers were asking the embattled party chairman not to contest for the 2019 election, while are some are in support of it. The Chairman has contituted a committee to resolve the differnce with in 24 hours. Instead of having Sheriff as the single candidate for the position of National Chairman, a sizeable propor-tion of the PDP lawmakers sought for the contest to be made open to all.
The meeting held in the Hearing Room 0.28 of the House of Representatives wing lasted between 4pm and 6pm. The deadlock was triggered when it was proposed by the anti-Sheriff lawmakers that nobody is supposed to be in office as National Chairman and still contest the presidential primaries of the party for 2019 election. They proposed he resign first if interested in another office.
Nevertheless, a 12-man committee has been constituted to meet the National Working Committee and the governors so as to find a lasting solution to the problem before the convention.
