The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has warned Senate President Godswill Akpabio to publish names of officials linked to an alleged ₦210 trillion discrepancy in the accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited or face legal action.

In a letter dated 21 March 2026, SERAP asked Akpabio to direct the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to release the identities and roles of all those implicated, along with key documents tied to the ongoing probe.

The group also demanded the publication of audit reports, financial records, and official communications, as well as full details of the committee’s proceedings, including evidence and timelines for the investigation.

The Senate panel is currently examining audit findings covering 2017 to 2023, which flagged about ₦210 trillion in entries that lawmakers say were not properly reconciled or explained.

According to SERAP, public disclosure is essential to build trust and ensure accountability.

“Full disclosure of the ongoing investigation is essential to prevent political interference and allow Nigerians to scrutinise the facts,” the organisation said.

The watchdog stressed that the scale of the alleged discrepancy raises serious concerns and requires a transparent and credible inquiry.

It noted that the committee had raised questions over missing documentation and inconsistencies in submissions from the oil company, with some officials yet to appear or provide satisfactory explanations.

SERAP warned that delays in the probe risk undermining public confidence and could lead to loss or distortion of key evidence.

The group gave the Senate seven days to act or face legal steps to compel compliance.

It also argued that publishing the names of those under investigation would reinforce accountability and reduce any perception of a cover-up.

“The magnitude of the sum, combined with the NNPCL’s history of opaque practices, underscores the urgency of a thorough and transparent investigation,” the letter stated.

The organisation added that clear timelines for hearings and the release of findings would help ensure the process is credible and efficient.

The probe continues as lawmakers seek to determine whether the discrepancies stem from accounting gaps or possible financial misconduct.
