A Magistrate Court sitting in Enugu has remanded three men for allegedly assaulting residents during the celebration of the Oriokpa Masquerade in Nsukka.
The suspects—Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Nnaemeka (30)—were arrested by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command and arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, extortion, and causing grievous bodily harm.
According to police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the trio was part of a masquerade group that attacked members of the public along Aku Road in Nsukka on June 22. A viral video captured scenes of the masqueraders assaulting passersby. One male victim was reportedly hospitalised due to injuries sustained during the attack.
“Subsequently, the three suspects were identified and arrested with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, while others fled,” Ndukwe stated in a release on Saturday.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a manhunt for the remaining members of the masquerade group still at large. The case has been adjourned to July 31, 2025, for further hearing.
