President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s ties with the United Kingdom, describing the relationship as rooted in shared history, values, and mutual interests.
Speaking at Windsor Castle during his state visit, Tinubu thanked King Charles III and the Royal Family for hosting him and his delegation, calling the moment historic.
“As the first Nigerian leader to speak here, this is a significant milestone,” he said, noting the symbolic role of Windsor Castle in Britain’s history.
Tinubu said both countries share a vision of progress and resilience, adding that their partnership remains vital in a changing global landscape.
He pointed to Britain’s influence on democratic governance, citing the legacy of the Magna Carta and thinkers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. He said these ideas helped shape Nigeria’s legal and political systems.
“Our institutions reflect values developed over centuries, including the rule of law and accountable government,” he said.
The President highlighted the role of Nigerians living in the UK, describing them as a strong link between both nations. He noted their contributions to key sectors, including healthcare, where many serve in the National Health Service.
He also referenced the success of British athletes of Nigerian heritage, including footballers and boxers, as evidence of deep cultural ties.
On security, Tinubu said Nigeria faces ongoing threats linked to terrorism in the Sahel region and stressed the importance of cooperation with the UK. He said discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus on strengthening this partnership.
Despite current challenges, Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, pointing to its young population and growing entrepreneurial base.
“We are a nation of resilient people determined to realise our potential,” he said.
The President also recalled the support Nigeria received from the UK during years of military rule, including his own experience in exile.
Tinubu said the visit marks a new phase in relations between both countries, built on respect and shared goals.
He concluded by calling for continued cooperation and a stronger partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
