500 council workers, residents benefit from AMAC’s malaria eradication outreach

No fewer than 500 members of staff of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and residents on Wednesday benefitted from the council’s malaria eradication outreach.

The outreach with the theme “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria”, was organised at the council’s secretariat, on in Abuja.

Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman of AMAC, said the outreach was part of the council’s committment to bring an end to malaria scourge among its residents.

Maikalangu, represented by Dr Matthew Danjuma, Speaker, AMAC Legislative Chamber said the health of staff and residents were of important to the council.

According to him, as a tier of government, it is important that the health of staff and residents of the council are taken seriously.

“We have been carrying out several outreaches in various communities, as there is always the need for people to know their health status,” he said.

Dr Modupe Adeyinka, Director, Primary Healthcare, said the medical outreach would be taken to different communities in the council in order to give them a sense of belonging.

“We started this outreach during the world malaria day event where some communities were visited and full fledged medical outreach was done in Kurudu and Lugbe.

“We are giving antimalarial drugs and insecticide treated mosquito nets to pregnant women and children under five years.

“The area council has been doing it every quarter and we are moving into the next quarter of the medical outreach,” she added.

Also speaking, Dr Dan Matthew, the Malaria Coordinator of AMAC said that the outreach would be extended to Garki village, Aleita community, among others in the next few days.

“The essence of malaria intervention cannot be over-emphasiaed because it is the major killer in the tropical region of Nigeria and it affects predominantly women and children.

“This exercise is continuous so that we can mitigate the effects of the disease, as it affects our economy and incomes of families,” he said.

 

Some beneficiaries, Mrs Amaka Eze and Mr Shiloh Sunday, appreciated the area council and the chairman for the free malaria screening, drugs and insecticide treated nets given to them.

Osun Poly Student, Olanrewaju Olatona killed by hit-and-run one-way driver

A Student Of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State, has died after being hit by a trailer driver on Monday, April 15.

The Accident was said to have occurred when the driver, who was reportedly driving against traffic, collided with the motorcycle conveying a student named Olanrewaju Olatona and another passenger along the Ikirun-Osogbo road area of the state.

Due to the severe impact, Olanrewaju Olatona, a National Diploma 2 student, suffered fatal injuries. He died at the scene.

 

Olatona, who was the Financial Secretary of the Department of Mass Communication, was preparing for the one-year Industrial Training programme.

The driver fled the scene after the accident and has not been apprehended.

Subsequently, Osun State Polytechnic students organised a procession in front of the school gate and blocked the expressway for several hours.

Unknown Gunmen Abduct Channelstv Reporter In Port-harcourt

Some unknown gunmen have kidnapped Joshua Rogers, the ChannelsTV reporter in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Politics Nigeria learnt that Rogers was picked up close to his residence at Rumuosi in Port Harcourt and to an unknown destination by the gunmen around 9pm on Thursday, April 11.

The reporter was driving his official ChannelsTV branded car when the hoodlums accosted, pointed a gun at him and took him away in the same vehicle.

 

Rogers was said to be returning from his official assignment in Government House after a trip to Andoni for a government event when the incident happened.

Already, the gunmen were said to have contacted his wife and demanded a N30million ransom for bis release.

His cameraman confirmed the incident and appealed to his abductors to set him free unconditionally.
